Physical Security

No, I am not talking about physical security in the sense that you walk around with a gun, taser or mace to protect yourself. I am talking about IT physical security! This topic deals with keeping data safe on things such as laptops, flash drives, CDs, mp3 players, cell phones, computers, etc.

How do we do this? By locking everything up and keeping it with us. Think about it. If you leave your cell phone lying on your desk at work, chances are no one is really going to steal it. There is a greater risk of someone stealing the data off of it! If you left your cell phone on the desk and it did not have a password,  then all I have to do is find what I want and send it to myself and then erase the history.  After I have stolen your information, your cell phone is returned right back in the same place I found it and you are none the wiser.

What about your flash drive? I see these things sitting around all the time, especially at work when there is so much confidential information to be had. Of course, I never would do such a thing, but a janitor that makes minimum wage that is approached by a company's competitor to steal information from flash drives may do it.  The janitor would gladly copy flash drives for $1000 per drive. All you have to do is take, copy, and return. No one knows that the information was stolen and it only takes seconds to do!

What to do? Keep everything with you that may contain sensitive data, secure it with a password, and don't trust anyone. Simple as that! Keep your cell phone or laptop with you at all times, if you have to leave it, password protect it (don't leave it for long because there are password crackers out there that can break in your computer in a matter of minutes).  Don't think that your best co-worker at work wouldn't like to get a hold of some dirt on you, say that picture of you with Cheetos up your nose, a beer bottle in your hand, and all your stuffs hanging out or this...

Good Luck and Stay Safe!
